Our academy offers a traditional academic curriculum built around the core disciplines of English, Maths, Science, Humanities and Languages. We offer the arts and have a number of subjects for students to develop their talents. Owing to our belief that students work best in groups of similar ability, classes are streamed. However, movement between classes is fluid so students can change up or down according to the progress they are making.
Rigorous assessment is a key feature of student life at Charter Academy. Teachers regularly mark students’ work, checking progress and providing formative feedback. Meanwhile every six weeks students can expect to be formally assessed, receiving a National Curriculum level (KS3), or GCSE grade/BTEC grade/OCR National grade (KS4). Classes are set according to ability, with frequent opportunity for transition between sets.
We expect students and parents to recognise the fundamental role of homework as a means of developing independent learning skills. Homework is set according to a homework timetable. Students are expected to write their homework in the planner. Parents are expected to check the planners each day and ensure that the homework is completed to a high standard. For parents the planner is a means of communicating with their tutor.
The academy will provide opportunities for some homework to be completed at after school clubs. Students will be able to access their homework on the 24H school. Therefore, there is no excuse for not completing it.
