Enrichment

Extra-curricular and enrichment activities

Education extends well beyond the classroom. Our extended school 'enrichment' programmes play an important part in pupils’ development, inspiring them not only to learn well but to become confident individuals and responsible citizens.

From September, there will be compulsory extended lessons in mathematics and English until 4.30pm for two days per week. This will be used for catch up for those students who need it, to challenge gifted and talented students and to provide opportunities for homework completion in mathematics and English with staff support on hand. The longer school days will be specified in each student's planner.

The academy provides a range of residential and personal development experiences and opportunities for pupils to participate in their local community. We have regular visits, field expeditions and other activities outside school. Pupils are involved in helping at events at the cathedral, charity fund-raising and have other opportunities to help people.

We are developing a comprehensive programme of after-school clubs and activities, which we hope will eventually include football, netball, martial arts, basketball, hockey and athletics, a debating society, drama, dance, chess and computer clubs. We have some access to courses at the Portsmouth Sailing Centre, as part of the PE curriculum.

Our School Council involves students in school decision-making and enables them to take responsibility for school policies. Leadership and initiative testing opportunities and enrichment activities are also available.

We expect pupils to be responsible representatives of the school at all times from participation in or acting as supporters of football matches to theatre visits or field trips.
