Charter Academy seeks to provide a broad, balanced and engaging curriculum that supports and challenges all of our students. In order to determine what level of challenge or support is required we use a variety of assessment techniques including Progress in Maths and Progress in English, Cognitive Ability Tests, reading tests and assessment results from the prior key stage.
This information is used in tandem with our six weekly assessment cycle to monitor learning and the progress our students have made. Our assessment weeks will be rapidly followed by a simple report home and target-setting days that allow our team to help guide, nurture and support our students through their learning to make sure they make maximum progress.
The school week consists of 27 one hour lessons with two additional optional lessons.
In Key Stage 3 there are six English and six mathematics lessons as the Academy firmly believes in depth before breadth - ensuring that our students are fully equipped with the key skills for learning. The Key Stage 3 students will also follow a course of science, PE, design technology, ICT, RE, humanities, music, drama and a dedicated lesson of citizenship.
In Key Stage 4 the students follow a core curriculum of, again, six hours of maths and English, with science, PE and citizenship. They are then free to choose up to four electives within our pathway structure. These electives will be determined by student number and also the best way to support their academic progress. The electives will include: ICT, humanities, extended PE, music, drama, dance, art and design, design technology and catering.
All students in Key Stage 4 are entered for GCSE subjects and vocational equivalents and with the support of the faculty teams we will ensure that they achieve excellent results.
